Not long ago, I embarked on a personal campaign to take off weight. Since then I have made several discoveries which I have shared with the readers of my emails.

One of these surprising discoveries centers around hypnosis, of all things. Hypnosis was the last thing I ever expected to become interested in, much less a proponent of, but life is full of surprises - and hypnosis has become one of life's surprises for me.

One thing I had to do, which wasn't too difficult for me, was to unlearn several misconceptions I had about hypnosis.

First of all, hypnosis does not involve any sort of loss of consciousness. You are fully aware and listening as you are being hypnotized (though you might fall asleep if you happen to be reclining).

The second myth is that hypnosis can change your beliefs against your will. This is absolute bunk! That is not what hypnosis is about.

To me, hypnosis is a form of encouragement. It is allowing someone else to encourage you to reach your goals.

A third myth is that a person might do something embarrassing while "under hypnosis." However, as stated above, this just can't happen, because you aren't "under" anything. You are fully awake and aware of what you are doing.

Kent Sayre, a respected hypnotist, rejects the theory that a person can be made to do a hypnotist's bidding.

"Nothing could be further from the truth," he says. "You cannot be hypnotized against your will. Nobody can be hypnotized to do anything they wouldn't normally do. If I could put people under my power, I would go up to the prisons and hypnotize all the inmates to become model citizens."

Hypnotism is simply an effective, life-affirming tool in your weight-loss arsenal. It makes the entire process easier, and far more enjoyable. I have made hypnotism an important part of my weight loss strategy, and so have many of my readers.
